Individual and Group Blogs and Wikis in Blackboard:  Learning Objects Journal LX & Teams LX Building Block Tools

Baruch College has recently joined a number of fellow CUNY schools in providing Learning Objects Campus Pack (Journal LX and Teams LX) Blackboard building block collaboration tools.  With Journal LX and Teams LX, instructors can engage students in generating content inside of Blackboard course spaces. Learning Objects features include:

  • Blog and wiki tools, internal to the Blackboard system
  • Student writing (and basic image posting) space inside Blackboards' authenticated system (not web searchable)
  • Course-wide, individual and group journals/blogs and wikis
  • Student content creation managed by and accessible to the instructor and fellow students

Journal LX and Teams LX are now available in your course site for the spring 2007 semester.  A course blog and wiki tool (for all faculty/students) is located in the Tools section of your course site. Learning Objects collaboration tools are turned on in all courses unless the instructor chooses to turn the tools off.

Individual and group blogs and wikis are created and managed using the page builder (Edit View / Select/Add Tool) options.

At this time, Journals LX & Teams LX content is recommended for use inside Blackboard course spaces only.

For best results, use Mozilla Firefox version 1.5 or higher on either PC or Apple computers.

For Learning Objects Journal LX or Teams LX training, please contact Jim Russell (x.4895) or Madeleine Fix (x.1039) in Instructional Technology.

If you are interested in working with external (public or password protected) academic blogs, please first contact Patrick Ackerman (Director of Web Services) at x.1065.  If you are working with the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute, please contact Mikhail Gershovich (Director) at (646) 312-2062.

What is a blog?

A blog is short for the term 'web log' and can be thought of simply as an online journal. As defined by the Learning Objects support pages, "a blog is a website that is designed to be updated frequently with new entries. The entries in a blog are usually displayed in reverse-chronological order (most-recent first)."

With Journals LX students can develop text-based content directly in Blackboard, sharing content between student & faculty member or with the entire class as a group. Faculty can create blogs and reflective journals for course groups and individual students, managing sharing rights and readership.

What is a wiki?

A wiki is a collaboratively built website (for example, Wikipedia.com).  Teams LX provides a space for individual and group collaboration in a web-based environment that tracks page changes.  Students can manage course-related projects by working with a Teams LX to add and edit individual wiki pages.  Collaboration can be engaged in as an entire course group, in smaller working groups, or individually between student and faculty member.
