Call for Proposals

Teaching and Learning with Technology at Baruch College
(Round 3)

With funding from the Baruch student technology fee, the Baruch Computing and Technology Center (BCTC) is providing grants of up to $5,000 for projects that further the use of digital technologies in teaching and learning. For the purposes of this grant “digital technologies” broadly encompasses many different technologies in the classroom and in support of the classroom.

Project Guidelines: All full-time faculty of Baruch College are eligible.  Projects should employ digital technologies in new ways to improve teaching and learning.  Projects that develop or help with jumbo or multi-section courses are particularly welcome.

Items purchased as part of the project will be acquired according to Baruch College’s procurement guidelines and be considered college property. Faculty will be asked to meet periodically with staff members from the BCTC to design, develop and review project materials and deliverables, and leaders of funded projects will be expected to present at the Baruch College Teaching and Technology Conference in April 2008. Unfortunately travel related proposals cannot be considered in this round.  Project budgets must be finalized and approved by the BCTC by June 15th.  No revisions to budgets will be possible after that date.

Due Date: Proposals must be submitted by May 18, 2007 and will be reviewed by a committee of faculty, students and IT staff.  Notification of awards will be made beginning May 31st and funds will be available on July 1st. Grants will be awarded until allocated funds for this round are expended. Approximately ten awards are anticipated.

What needs to be submitted: There is a suggested form attached. Whether you use the suggested form or your own, your proposal should include a narrative (not to exceed 250 words), a budget, contact information, and a brief assessment component. The evaluation committee will not consider incomplete proposals.  If a proposal involves collaboration with other faculty, please name a principal contact.  Your budget should include quotes for software or hardware, estimates of instructional staff time, as well as a list of other anticipated expenses. Approval from Dean and Department Chair are necessary for proposals involving summer salary or overload assignments. The evaluation criteria for proposals will focus on: the degree to which the project advances the stated learning goals of a course or program, enhances the students opportunity for success, ability to assess project outcomes, number of students served, amount of technical support required for end-users and adaptability to other courses or sections.

Examples of potential proposals include:

  • Development of subject-based web tutorials (video or multimedia based) in support of course curriculum

  • Development of podcasts to be used as course materials

  • Development of video projects for student self assessment or peer evaluation

  • Innovative use of the library’s online research databases in course assignments

  • Production of video podcasts to allow students to review visual resources while listening to a narrative as part of a course
