Mathematics Refresher Seminars
for the
Fall 2009 Cohort

The mathematics department has been offering refresher seminars in C++, Advanced Calculus, Probability, and Linear Algebra to students admitted into the Financial Engineering MS Program since Summer 2004.

The math refresher seminars are different from regular undergraduate courses. The Advanced Calculus, Probability and Linear Algebra seminars focus on topics to be examined in greater detail in the program, cover a number of challenging financial applications, and are taught by experienced instructors from the MFE faculty. The C++ seminar is taught by the same instructors who teach the MTH 9815 course, which ensures that every student will be at the appropriate level of programming proficiency at the start of the semester.

The refresher seminars are not for credit and are closed to people not admitted to the Financial Engineering MS Program.

The book A Primer for the Mathematics of Financial Engineering by Professor Dan Stefanica, covering the material taught in the Advanced Calculus refresher seminar, has recently been published. See the table of contents for the topics covered in the  refrehser seminar.  Sample sections from the book can be found here.  A Solutions Manual, including over fifty supplemental exercises with complete solutions, is also available.  More information can be found here.
