The exhibition entitled "George Maciunas: Father of SoHo," celebrated the publication of Illegal Living: 80 Wooster Street and the Evolution of SoHo, by authors Roslyn Bernstein and Shael Shapiro.

Prof. Marlow Wins Media Ecology Award

Prof. Eugene Marlow of the Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions has been awarded the 2010 James W. Carey Award for Outstanding Media Ecology Journalism.

D&S Site wins gold crown award

Only a few months after launching, the online incarnation of Dollars & Sense won a Gold Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. D&S was the only online magazine to receive Gold Crown honors. In addition, the 2009 print issue of Dollars & Sense won a Silver Crown Award, which is its third straight Crown Award.

Department Launches Citywide H.S. Contest

Baruch College's Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions, the only undergraduate journalism department within the City University of New York, is pleased to announce a Citywide competition for New York high school journalism - The Newsies.

This new competition is open to all New York City public high schools. Teachers/advisers are responsible for nominating and submitting entries on behalf of their students. Read more.

STudents' Work Published by Gotham Gazette

Two students in Prof. Christopher Hallowell's Environmental Reporting class had stories published by The Gotham Gazette. Ben Spencer wrote about how Chinatown buses are adversely affecting the city. Anya Khalamayzer covered a community hearing on conversion plans for the old Domino Sugar factory in Brooklyn.

D&S hosts photojournalism panel

Photojournalists Yunghi Kim, Timothy Fadek and Ed Kashi discussed their work at an April 20 panel celebrating Dollars & Sense's first year as an online magazine.

Department Joins News Literacy Discussion

Baruch College's Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions is actively engaged in the national discussion of news literacy education and best practices. Here, Prof. Geanne Rosenberg, with the microphone, on the right, participated in a news literacy conference at Louisiana State University, in Baton Rouge, in January.

Department Unveils "Studio H"

The Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions has launched "Studio H," a state-of-the-art journalism laboratory designed to bring cutting-edge technological capabilities into the classroom and train the next generation of students in the most advanced techniques of news gathering and dissemination.  The facility was made possible by a $1 million gift from The Harnisch Family Philanthropies.

Prof. Roz Bernstein is out with a short story collection, Boardwalk Stories. Read more about the book. The book was mentioned in a recent New York Times article about Prof. Bernstein's hometown of Long Beach, Long Island.

 

 

JOURNALISM BECOMES NEWEST DEPARTMENT

After more than three decades as a specialized program within the Department of English, journalism at Baruch College has become a department.  The Weissman School of Arts and Sciences launched the new Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions on July 1, 2008.
